Letter From the Editor

Dear Grace Community,

This is another first in a year of firsts. Grace Magazine, known as GCS News for more than 65 years*, is usually published twice a year in print with several features posted to our website. This special edition of the magazine is completely digital, and we hope you will give some time to read the many stories about how our school community faced adversity this past year and came out more committed to our values and to each other.

Inside you’ll find a message from George Davison about the past year and how the school has managed the Covid crisis and managed to stay open. An update on the school’s work towards embodying antiracism into our culture and structures (and why?). Short notes of news around school, accomplishments and celebrations for faculty and staff, and a special section for alumni, including a profile of Nkem Oghedo ’04 written by Grace Junior Naaz V., a note from the Alumni Board and recent events.

We have long considered how best to get the word out about Grace to the community, and, one of the silver linings of this incredibly tough year has been the ways we’ve been pushed to reinvent what we do to be smarter, more efficient and, most of all, more effective. Moving this publication to a digital format allowed us to include interactive multimedia content, it reduced our costs and production time, and it has made it easier to connect all members of the community with what’s happened during the past year. But don’t worry, we’ll be back this summer with a print edition for all of us who still love to hold a physical copy in our hands. You can always find past editions of the magazine at news.gcschool.org.

Let us know what you think of this new format.

*The original Grace Church School News dates back to at least 1936 and included editions written entirely by students. In the oldest copy the school has in possession, Vol. 1 – No. 8 published on March 6, 1936 students crafted short missives about the quality of the fifth grade, the upcoming spring training and return of the New York Giants baseball team, the “very good effect” that “Ave Maria” had on the students in the Chantry, and a thorough review of “The Party Last Friday.”
