Babies

Alpha Kann, Assistant Director of Technology for Operations and family welcomed Fatoumata Linda Kann, born on August 9, 2021. In his culture, baby naming ceremonies are held seven days after birth. During the ceremony, children are named after parents, grandparents and people held in high esteem. Thus, the Kann family decided to honor Linda Cooper, Assistant to the Head of School, with the baby’s middle name.

Accomplishments

Gabriela Salazar, High School Visual Art displayed sculptural installation and performance, “Low Relief for High Water,” in Washington Square Park on Sunday, October 10, 2021. Presented in collaboration with The Climate Museum, the interactive presentation explored themes of home, vulnerability, caretaking and collective responsibility in the face of climate change via a sculpture crafted from water-soluble paper.

Uyen Nguyen, High School Math was a featured guest for the National Museum of Mathematics’ annual fundraising gala, speaking on a panel about the intersection of math and art. Other panelists included engineer Chuck Hoberman, MIT professor Erik Demaine and artist John Edmark.

Wendy Small, JK-8 Nurse displayed a collection of her artwork at London’s Huxley Parlour Gallery’s show, “I Belong to This,” a show about “self and family, private rites and communal ritual, along a continuum of becoming.”

In his professional work as a composer, Marcelo Toledo, High School Spanish’s piece “Luminous Emptiness” was recently released in Bandcamp for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, trumpet, trombone and percussion. The 74 minute-long work was commissioned by The Essl Museum in Vienna for the Wien Modern Festival and premiered by Klangforum Wien Ensemble.

Additionally, he presented his opera, “The Jungle Within” at the Experimental Center of Colon Theater in Buenos Aires, Argentina and at the Ultraschall Festival für neue Musik in Berlin.

Luminous Emptiness - Marcelo Toledo

This summer, the Friends Academy in North Dartmouth, MA added to their “New Heads of Color” conference program with a program for white administrators exploring  antiracism in their practices.

Faculty and designers of the program included several experts including Grace’s Dean of Community Life, Kim Chaloner. The conference will be held next year at the Kent Place School in Summit, NJ.

Andrew Leonard, Director of Vocal Music, HS Division, performed his original song “Redeem U” at Brooklyn venue Elsewhere, opening for indie musicians Xeno & Oaklander at their album release party.
